Disease investigation  laboratory of Sheep Husbandry department was established in 1965-66 and become functional in 1966-67. It acts as a pioneer institute for diagnostic and allied procedures associated in  the disease investigation and control. It is supported by different District/ Farm labs which are equipped to conduct primary investigation at respective laboratories.

Disease investigation and control in flocks are of paramount importance in commercial farming to reduce losses by way of morbidity and mortality in animal, besides of its significance for zoonotic nature of some disease. The range and frequency of disease increased due to importation  and introduction of exotic blood in the local flocks, and unchecked inter-divisional and inter-state immigration of livestock’s   .

Disease investigation laboratory of Sheep Husbandry Department is operating from Nowshera, Srinagar and has the following objective and mandate .

1.     Diagnosis and investigation of disease in flocks by attending outbreaks .

2.     Study of disease pattern in various areas and seasons in the division.

3.     Devising and advising  various control measures of disease.

4.     Production of Sheep Pox- vaccine (killed) out of local strain found to be very effective at the height of outbreaks.

5.     Conduction of awareness programmes in field about new emerging disease.

6.     Quality analysis of feed and fodder samples.

7.     Screening of livestock (Govt. as well as private)  against various disease like, brucellosis  , jhones disease, tuberculosis etc.

8.     Mass vaccination programmes against disease  like  sheep pox, clostridial disease, FMD and PPR.

9.     Conducting  drug/ vaccine trials to confirm their suitability for animal use in local conditions.
