Brief Profile of District Ganderbal

District Sheep Husbandry Organization Ganderbal first came into being with the division of erstwhile District Srinagar in the year 2007 with Bandipora, Srinagar and Kargil on its west, south and north respectively. The District is spread on either side of River Sindh.

District Ganderbal is divided into 4 technical blocks viz. Ganderbal, Kangan, Lar and Wakura for smooth conduct of field operations and grass root utilization and monitoring of services through Veterinary Assistant Surgeons. The extension work and health care facilities are being provided through 27 Sheep Extension Centers and 3 First Aid Centers in the district.

District Ganderbal by virtue of its vast lush green pasture areas and orchard land, offers great scope for sheep and goat rearing not only on marginal scale but on entrepreneur scale as well. During summer months, the lush green pastures of District Ganderbal not only cater to grazing needs of the local small ruminant population but also of five lac sheep from other districts of valley and that of Jammu province.
